When Ear Congestion Signals a Problem in Children or Adults
posted: Jun. 18, 2025.
Ear infections are a common childhood illness, especially in infants and toddlers. They can come on suddenly, often when a child has just gotten over a cold. While many ear infections resolve on their own, some require medical care to prevent complications or ongoing discomfort. Knowing when to seek care from a pediatrician—or an ENT specialist—can help ensure your child gets the right treatment at the right time.
Understanding The Signs Of An Ear Infection
Children don’t always have the words to describe what they’re feeling, so it’s important to look for physical and behavioral clues. Signs of a possible ear infection include:
- Tugging or pulling at the ears
- Fussiness, irritability, or sudden crying spells
- Trouble sleeping or lying flat
- Fever, especially in younger children
- Fluid draining from the ear
- Trouble hearing or responding to sounds
These symptoms can develop quickly, often following a cold or sinus infection, and may affect one or both ears.
When To See A Pediatrician
While some mild ear infections can clear up without treatment, it’s time to visit your pediatrician if:
- Your child has a fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
- Symptoms last more than 48 hours
- Pain is severe or interfering with sleep
- There is fluid or pus coming from the ear
- Your child has recurrent ear infections
Prompt care is especially important for babies under 6 months old or children with a history of ear problems.
When ENT Care May Be Needed
If your child experiences frequent ear infections—typically three or more in six months, or four in a year—your pediatrician may refer you to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. At North Texas Ear Nose and Throat, our team helps families in Rowlett, Rockwall, and Garland determine the root cause of repeat infections and explore longer-term solutions.
We may recommend tests to evaluate hearing or fluid buildup, and in some cases, discuss procedures like ear tube placement to reduce future infections and improve drainage.

At North Texas Ear Nose and Throat, we understand that persistent ear issues can affect more than just hearing—they can impact speech development, sleep, and quality of life. Our team works closely with pediatricians and families to create care plans that are effective and minimally invasive.
