FAQs About Hearing Aids

Get to know more about hearing aids and how they can help you hear better.

Are you dealing with hearing loss? If so, our Rowlett, Rockwall, and Garland, TX, otolaryngologist Dr. Brent Metts has probably recommended that you get hearing aids to improve your hearing. Of course, it’s natural to have questions about hearing aids, especially if you don’t know much about them and how they work. Here are the most frequently asked questions we get about hearing aids.

What is a hearing aid?

A hearing aid is a small electronic device that can be worn either in the ear or behind the ear to help amplify sounds and make it easier for those with certain hearing loss to understand better and pick up specific sounds and noises.

A hearing aid comprises three parts: a microphone, amplifier and speaker. Thanks to advancements in technology, modern-day hearing aids are now sleeker and smaller than ever before, making them more discreet and less visible to those around you.

Will a hearing aid restore my hearing?

People need to understand that even once our Rowlett, Rockwall, Garland, TX, ENT doctor provides you with a hearing aid, this device will not repair or fix your hearing loss. A hearing aid aims to improve your hearing and amplify certain sounds to make it easier to understand what people are saying, particularly in loud environments where it might be more challenging.

What things do I need to consider before buying a hearing aid?

It’s time to consider your lifestyle, habits and budget when deciding on the best hearing aid. For example, if you are a very athletic and active person, you’ll want to find a hearing aid to fit into your lively lifestyle. The type and severity of hearing loss can also determine which kinds of hearing aids will be more effective.

We will sit down with you during your evaluation and ask you questions to help determine the best hearing aid for you.

How long will it take to get used to wearing my hearing aid?

Just like it takes time to adjust to dentures, a new hearing aid will also require an adjustment period. How long it takes for someone to get accustomed to their hearing aid will vary from person to person, and it may also depend on the severity of your hearing loss and how long you waited to get treatment. It’s important that you wear them regularly to get used to your new device much faster.

How long do hearing aids last?

This will depend on how well you maintain your new hearing device, but on average, a hearing aid can last anywhere from 3-5 years.
